Agate is a crystal belonging to the quartz family. It is especially known for the layered rings on the inside of the stone. The agate properties are grounding, stabilising and protective. It also stimulates focus, healing and clear communication. Thanks to the enormous variety of types and colours, it is one of the most popular gemstones we know.
The history and Origins of Agate
The name agate probably comes from the river Achates in Sicily, where the stone was mined for centuries. But agate is also found in other places around the world, such as Brazil, India and Uruguay. As far back as antiquity, people used agate as an amulet and in rituals, for example in cultures such as Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greece. There, this stone was known as the stone of strength, courage and balance.
The rings in agate are formed by repeated deposits of silica-rich groundwater or minerals in cavities of rock such as volcanic fluid. That layer-by-layer process is reflected in every unique pattern. As a result, no two agates are the same. The youngest agates are at least 15 million years old and the oldest can take up to 50 million years to grow.
The Agate Properties
The properties of agate partly overlap with celestite. The biggest difference between these two gemstones lies in the earthly versus the spiritual. Where celestite works on your third eye and crown chakra, agate works on the root chakra. This way, the stone works strongly on the physical dimension and restores the connection with your body and the here-and-now.
Do you quickly feel overwhelmed or out of balance? Agate helps you to land. It strengthens your sense of safety and emotional stability. From that grounded base, you can then think more clearly and better deal with what comes your way. From that stillness, agate also strengthens your self-confidence and perseverance.

Cleansing and Charging Agate
Agate can easily be cleansed with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents. Want to charge it? Place it in moonlight, on a clear quartz cluster or briefly in the earth.
What to avoid: aggressive cleaning agents, prolonged direct sunlight and storing it with hard stones that could damage it.
